Could anyone advise as to whether or not we could offer a laptop, or other equipment, to apprentices who have learning support needs and then go on to claim this as part of their package of ALS through the EAS?

    Hi Joanne
We have asked the ESFA recently about this and the answer was no.

    Hi Tracey

Did they say why (or, indeed, where it says in the Rules that you can’t)?

Six or seven years ago the Rules *explicitly* banned using ALS for equipment, but that explicit reference is no longer there. I’d rather assumed this meant that it wasn’t banned anymore (and that the timeframe meant it was related to making reasonable adjustments for learners with disabilities), but I’ve never got round to asking…

    Hi Steve,
I tend to agree in that if the equipment is required specifically for reasonable adjustment as part of the Equality Act 2010 then this should be funded, the only instance I have experienced was for a computer and software for a visually impaired learner. However, in the context that the question was asked it would not be funded via ALS.
